H.E.R.O: Humane and Effective Response Options
Course Number
WM4
Overview
The HERO Framework (Humane, Effective, Response Options) is a tool to evaluate our responses to challenging behaviors. It helps staff assess whether their actions are humane or abusive and effective or ineffective, based on whether the desired outcome was achieved.
The framework outlines four response types:
Permissive: Ignoring behavior; humane but often ineffective.
Controlling: Using threats or force; effective short-term but abusive.
Harmful: Abusive and ineffective; fails to achieve the intended outcome.
Partnering: Calmly setting expectations, listening, and offering appropriate alternatives; both humane and effective.
